In my entrepreneurial workshops I connect with individuals who want to start a business based on something they are passionate about. Here’s the short about passion and starting a business based on it – having something you’re passionate about is good. But at the end of the day, business sense must prevail.
So do your homework; ensure that the service or product you want to offer is needed and can add value in the marketplace. Explore ways to create a brand story that resonates with intended users. Do a survey or poll. Let your passion fuel your drive, commitment and level of service but don’t use it to start a business.
Keep in mind that:
•Your passion for something does not necessarily translate into a salable product or service.
•Your passion for something should not be the sole reason to create something to sell.
•Just because you like or enjoy something does not mean people will pay for it.
•Being passionate about something is not a reason to start a sustainable business.
